GIFT PICK: More DIY Scarves

Photos on mugs? Boring. On mousepads? Cheap. On stickers? Sometimes.

Hayden-Harnett is a game changer in the whole upload-a-photo-on-an-inanimate-object realm. Their new Bespoke Scarf Service lets you place a picture (or artwork, or really anything you can save as a JPG) and print it on a scarf (sheer silk chiffon, as seen above, or opaque sandwashed silk). They guarantee to inspect the image for graininess, and insist that even photos taken with smartphones come out looking luxe.

Now. Which will it be for me?

LISTEN: Girl Talk's Backyard-Barbecue Mix

I first heard about Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis) while spinning at the gym. I was in the room alone when a woman came in and hooked up her iPod to the main speakers. My first thought was, 'Ugh, fine, I'll listen to your stupid music."

And then I realized, wait, this is actually sorta good. Wait... this is awesome... Holy crap, turn this up! I feel like I could spin forEVERRRRRRR!

Anyway, Vulture asked Girl Talk to put together his ultimate summer playlist, and I got sick of clicking through each of the songs one by one, so I compiled them on Grooveshark.com.

Cheers to easy listening!

N SKY C

The sky may be gray today, but technically it's #D3D5D4. I know this because ambitious web designer Mike Bodge decided to take a photo of the NYC sky every few minutes, determine the average color of each, and then plot them on this website for all of us to enjoy. Scroll down for sunrise delight!

Postcards for the Post-Post Era

My family was always annoyingly into postcards. I had an entire shoe box full of Hello from Vail’s and Greetings from Maui’s--mainly from the same creepy uncle--that I was never allowed to throw away or at my brother. My mom tried to will me into treasuring them the way she treasures handwritten letters and everything leopard print, but somehow I never really saw the point.

Thankfully, Postgram has revived the old school postcard into a stamp-free, paper-free thrill, and this time I'm into it.

Just snap a photo from your iPhone or Android, upload it to the app, type a short note with the recipient’s address, and BAM—your Postagram is on its way. When it arrives, your faraway friend will be delighted to find that the photo pops out for immediate frame-ability.

And what will they do with those heartfelt words you wrote on the other half of the card? Probably toss 'em, but hey, at least you avoided your own shoe box incident.

Sweet Paul

Every time I see a new digimag pop up I get very, very excited. I've been following shelter pubs Lonny and Rue since their inception, and a few others have caught my eye along the way. But Sweet Paul, a food + home magazine based on Paul Lowe's blog, takes the cake. The design and photography are stunning, and the point of view is clear. Not to mention, Sweet Paul is stinking adorable.

Can I make wallpaper out of this photo?

Hello Giggles

Zooey Deschanel gives us a fourth reason to adore her (Reason #1, Reason #2, Reason #3) with a newly launched website for women, Hello Giggles. Deschanel and her co-founding friends (producer Sophia Rossi and Internet sensation Molly McAleer) claim the site will be "the ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females." I don't know if that's exactly true, but there are a few gems here and there, and you gotta love her for trying.

Bite-Sized Do-Gooding

After missing too many meetings with the charity I'd been working with (Step Up Women's Network - they have excellent youth mentoring programs), I've been searching for volunteering opportunities that A) are easy to get to B) are relatively inexpensive and C) match my skills and interests.

The newly launched microvolunteering network, Sparked, is all that and more. Simply fill out a brief questionnaire and you'll be presented with matching "challenges" (for example, "How should we prioritize our social media efforts?" from Save a Mother, and "Can you help us spread the word about our upcoming celebrity event?" from Help For Orphans Intl.).

Offer advice on your own time and help mobilize non-profits you care about. It's a win-win.

DAME DEAL: 1/2 Off Pizza From HomeMade Pizza Co.

A Chicago pizza company is invading the New York area. But it's okay, the owner's from here originally.

The HomeMade Pizza Company opened its fifth east coast location in Hoboken a few weeks ago, and their signature take-and-bake pies are the perfect dinner option for a busy day. Stop by the shop, choose your crust and (locally-sourced) ingredients, and pop it in your oven at home.

Owner Eric Fosse says he spent more than two years perfecting the crust in his home kitchen, and let's just say it beats Boboli's. But don't take it from me, take it from Oprah.

Mention 'The Dame' or print out the voucher and get 1/2 off your first medium pizza. Offer expires June 30th.

Preview: Gilt Taste

Somehow food markets just aren't as appealing when they're online. Although, Gilt's new culinary "magazine" (in beta) does a pretty good job of selling its catalog of artisan food products with beautiful photography and difficult-looking recipes (and no ads!).

So far, I applaud Gilt's attempt to create a "groundbreaking digital-magazine-catalog hybrid," and can't wait until they launch a version for iPad. In the mean time, I'll be waiting for the how-to videos before I try my hand at the recipes.

Adele: Tiny Desk Concert

This NPR Tiny Desk Concert will be on repeat until tonight... Adele at Beacon Theater. Curious to see how her performance has changed since I saw her during her pre-Grammy days. She was nervous and bumbly, but still breathtaking.

Going to the show? Check out a clip of her opener, The Civil Wars.

GIFT PICK: A Perfume For Your Problems

Bruised? Backed up? Broken up with? There's an oil for that. 21 Drops has created aromatherapy blends for 21 "universal concerns." Available in trios like 'The Weekender' and 'Travel Well,' or custom-blend your own. (I'm going with 5+19+21. It's called 'Lazy.')

Try This At Home

A simple recipe for Sugar Body Scrub from Sprout:

  • 1 cup organic demerara sugar (or any other coarse sugar will work)
  • 1-2 tsp organic unrefined coconut oil
  • 2 tsp organic shredded coconut
Mix shredded coconut and sugar in a small bowl, stir until blended. Heat coconut oil in a small pot just until melted. Pour coconut oil over sugar and shredded coconut, you'll notice it liquefies some of the sugar. With a fork or spoon, stir oil into the sugar mixture. It will start to spread. Continue until the sugar is all one consistency.

To use: Apply a small amount to areas you want to exfoliate and moisturize.

GIFT PICK: BabyCakes Cookbook

The Beauty Department

There's something about Lauren Conrad that doesn't bother me. (Is it this hairdryer photo? Nope.) So if she had to go and launch her own beauty site, I'm okay with it. Especially since she used a Rue Magazine art director for the site design (props to her good taste).

Not much content there yet, but maybe it will turn into something good. Check it out at thebeautydepartment.com.
